Tips On Small Mixers Selection

 

These notes are for guidance to persons starting out in business and only needing a small batch production capability, or to those looking for small mixers for specialized batches of product, or working with small batches in laboratories or pilot plants.

Selection of small mixers will require of you to generally give the same considerations to general mixer selection by type and batch size as the first step in mixer choice. You should refer to all the selection information in our section “MIXER SELECTION” in the main drop down list on this site. It is most important that you realize the importance of care in selection of even the smallest of mixers and especially the safety considerations. We so often hear that “a shaft and propeller is all I need” and “I can easily build my own mixer”. This is not a prudent approach to setting up your business or laboratory facilities and much consideration must be given to all aspects of the system design.

BEWARE – you are working with dangerous and high risk machines and safe design involves great care with the stands, steadying arrangements, alignment and the electrical starters, variable speed drives and emergency stops required by law. Explosive environments such as solvent products need special engineering.

Once the type of mixer is chosen, small mixer selection will always be driven by the container, tank or pot type. Jones therefore provides the following mixer types for your consideration, given the container you aim to use as your ‘process vessel’. Consider the types of mixers below that fall into our range of SMALL MIXERS in conjunction with the container or vessel available for your process. Exercise great care in the selection of tanks or containers, as your product may not be compatible with plastic or steel and perhaps stainless steel tanks will (for example) be the necessary choice. Don’t underestimate draining arrangements and compatibility of seals with solvents, food and many other limitations. Jones can assist with the full scope of design requirements.

We will assist you in specification of your full requirements for your electrical supply to your mixer installation and we can advise on the merits of variable speed drives or more advanced controls such as programmable logical controllers (PLC) driven installations.

We also provide design assistance for small pressure or vacuum vessels or other unique design requirements such as heating or cooling jackets, wiper stirring and many other process needs.

SMALL MIXER TYPES

► PLASTIC, STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL TANKS SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE MIXERS
These mixers are propeller or turbine impeller types.
Our JONES TE MIXERS are inserted through a prepared hole or nozzle in the tank top or
occasionally into the open top of open tanks and are generally supported with an independent external bolted down pedestal to provide a safe and robust stand for the drive (typically in case of plastic tanks). Steel and other metal tanks can also have a mixer fitted on a top mounted bridge.
It is in principle possible to use this type of mixer for stirred mixing up to 10000 litres plastic tanks, but the most popular small mixer arrangement is for 500 to 1500 litres.
Clearly in this case the plastic tank serves as your mixingtank’. Steel and stainless steel custom fabricated tanks can also be manufactured for such applications on request.
CAUTION: Plastic tanks may build up static electricity and can discharge at unforeseen times. Care must be exercised in the use of plastic tanks with solvents in general and plastic tanks should not be used with explosive chemicals. Plastic tanks are also very limited for temperature services.

► IBC MIXERS (Intermediate Bulk Container) (1000 litres, 265 US Gal., 220 Imperial Gal.)

These mixers are small propeller or collapsible turbine impeller types.
Our JONES IBC MIXERS are inserted through the top ‘manhole’, screw cap loading inlet and are fitted onto a rigid plate on the IBC framework.
Clearly in this case the plastic IBC serves as your mixing ‘tank’.
CAUTION: IBC containers build up static electricity and can discharge electrical charges (static) at unforeseen times. Care must be exercised in the use of IBC containers with solvents in general and IBCs must not be used with explosive chemicals.

200 LITRE DRUMS TO 800 LITRE TANKS – OPEN TOP STEEL OR STAINLESS STEEL (55 US Gal., 44 Imperial Gal.)
These mixers are standard propeller or disperser blade fitted mixers.
Our JONES WALL MOUNTED MIXERS (WMAs) are fitted with propellers for general purpose mixing and are mounted on a suitable wall with bolt through wall fitting.
Our JONES WALL MOUNTED DISPERSERS (WMAs) are fitted with disperser blades for paint mixing of starter companies or for small paint batches or special batch tinting at established companies. These mixers are also mounted on a suitable wall with bolt-through wall fitting.
Clearly a suitable steel or SS floor tank is used as your mixing ‘tank’.

200 LITRE DRUMS – OPEN TOP – PLASTIC OR STEEL (55 US Gal., 44 Imperial Gal.)
These mixers are standard propeller or disperser blade fitted mixers.
Our JONES DRUM MIXERS are fitted with propellers for general purpose mixing and are mounted on top the drum with a safe fitting gripper ring on the drum lip.
Our JONES DRUM MIXERS are fitted with disperser blades for paint mixing of starter companies or for small paint batches or special batch tinting at established companies. These mixers are also mounted on top the drum with a safe fitting gripper ring on the drum lip.
Clearly in these cases the drum serves as your mixing ‘tank’.

► 200 LITRE DRUMS – CLOSED TOP – STEEL (55 US Gal., 44 Imperial Gal.)
These mixers are standard tumbler type mixers designed to tumble 200 litre drums.
Our JONES DRUM TUMBLER MIXERS are fitted with straps to hold the full drum in place during rotation or tumbling.
The tumbling effect achieves a mixing process in the drum itself and can be used with a variety of low to medium viscosity liquids.
Clearly in these cases the drum serves as your mixing ‘tank’.

DRUM TUMBLER MASTER

200 LITRE DRUMS – CLOSED TOP – STEEL BUNG LOADED (55 US Gal., 44 Imp. Gal.)
These mixers are collapsible turbine impeller types. These mixers can be used for general stirring of products in 200 litre drums.
Our JONES DRUM-BUNG MIXERS are fitted with special collapsible impellers to fit into the drum bung. These mixers are mounted directly on top of the drum, and the assembly screws into the bung itself.
Clearly in these cases the steel drum serves as your mixing ‘tank’.

► 20 to 100 LITRE BUCKETS – OPEN BUCKET (5.3/26.5 US Gallons, 4.4/22 Imperial Gallons)

These mixers are specially designed for open lid bucket mixing.
Our JONES BUCKET MIXERS are fitted with special flinger blades for mixing of a variety of pastes, floor grouting and such products. They are site mixing.
These mixers are safely mounted on a firm base plate that is an integral part of the mixer supplied.
Clearly in these cases the bucket serves as your mixing ‘tank’.

20 to 100 LITRE PILOT MIXER – OPEN POT (5.3/26.5 US Gallons, 4.4/22 Imperial Gallons)
These mixers are available in various types of impellers including propellers, turbines, dispersers, rotor-stator mixers or spiral stirrer impellers
Our JONES PILOT MIXERS are fitted with the impeller type that suits your service. These mixers are safely mounted on a firm base.

1 to 25 LITRE LABORATORY MIXER AND LABORATORY MILLS (0.3/6.6 US Gallons, 0.2/5.5 Imperial Gallons)
These mixers are available in a wide range of impellers although the most popular types are disperser, propeller or rotor-stator laboratory scale mixers.
Our JONES LAB MIXERS are fitted with the impeller type that suits your service. These mixers are safely mounted on a firm base.

SMALL STATIC MIXERS
These mixers are available in the static mixer tube assembly.
Our JONES STATIC MIXERS are supplied for small scale testing services from very small units (size on request) up to 100 mm base units. The units are supplied in the tube assembly and are thus safe to the holding pipe pressure rating.
Clearly the tube is the ‘vessel’ or ‘container’ in this case
